New to Idaho?
There are important items to take care of to become an offical resident of Idaho. These include:
Registering your Vehicle
If Idaho is your principal place of residence for 30 continuous days, you’ll need to register your out-of-state car with the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Depending on the county you reside in, you may need to have a VIN inspection.
Exchanging your Out-of-State Driver’s License
If you have an out-of-state driver’s license or a commercial driver’s license (CDL), you’ll need to apply for an Idaho’s driver’s license within 30 days of residing in Idaho. You do not need an Idaho driver’s license if you’re only in Idaho temporarily to attend college/university or to fulfill military obligations.
Registering to Vote
The Idaho Secretary of State oversees voter registration and elections. Once you establish residency in Idaho, you can register to vote. Be sure to have a current Idaho driver’s license or identification card before registering.
Registering a Boat
The Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation handles boat licensing and registration. You can purchase your boat registration and recreation permits online, in-person, or over the phone.

Update your Address with the Idaho DMV
Notify the Idaho DMV of a change in address to be reflected on your driver’s license and car registration.
